How can sustainability be achieved through digital transformation?

In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, sustainability has become a pivotal factor in shaping long-term success. For companies seeking to stay ahead of the curve, integrating sustainable technologies and practices could be beneficial, not only in terms of collaborating to create a healthier world, but also in terms of unlocking several business benefits such as efficiency, cost reduction, and increased competitiveness.

In today's world, there are numerous and intricate sustainability problems in societies. Digitalization and software have the power to resolve many of these issues, offering solutions that benefit not just the organizations employing these strategies but also the environment we live in.

Going digital can bring benefits such as aiming for a global market with our products and solutions, reaching a wider base of consumers and clients, discovering new funding sources, fostering interoperability with other segments of our business's value chain, and contributing to a more environmentally friendly world.

Let's dive into some of the challenges occurring within this industry.

  • Water management: Sustainable water management practices contribute to the preservation of natural ecosystems, ensure water availability for future generations, and help mitigate the impacts of climate change. It can also support various industries and reduce the overall environmental footprint. By implementing digital solutions, such as tokenizing water savings that can be sold in a 24/7 global market, we can prevent the overuse of this limited resource, thus helping producers increase their income without the need to change any of their agricultural practices. An example is Kilimo, an Argentine company that verifies, improves, and compensates for water use in agriculture, digitizing water savings.

  • Waste Management: One of the major challenges faced by cities and industries is the sustainable handling of generated waste. By digitizing waste management processes, such as recycling, waste differentiation, and the system for processing and recovery, we can improve the operations behind waste management. An example is the City of Buenos Aires, which was recognized for its waste management and recycling efforts in February 2021. Buenos Aires' waste management system adopts multiple strategies to reduce waste generation, repurpose it as resources, and promote community involvement. This includes a comprehensive containerized collection system that sorts waste and employs various techniques for processing and recovery.

  • Protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems: encompass a range of practices and initiatives aimed at preserving and reviving natural habitats and diverse ecosystems. In the context of sustainability, this involves safeguarding and nurturing the variety of species and their habitats, as well as promoting health and resilience. Through digitalization, these practices and initiatives can be improved. For instance, the ProYungas Foundation is an NGO dedicated to environmental conservation and sustainable development. It focuses on promoting territorial planning processes at different scales, actively fostering a connection between production and nature preservation. ProYungas brings together various local stakeholders to actively participate in the sustainable management of shared territories, drawing on diverse perspectives and interests.

  • Tracking, Tracing and Transparency in the supply chain: involve implementing robust tracking and tracing mechanisms. These mechanisms help companies ensure that materials are sourced from environmentally responsible suppliers, monitor the environmental impact of production processes, and verify compliance with sustainability standards. With the aid of digitalization and software, it becomes possible to enhance supply chain efficiency, thereby reinforcing the commitment to sustainability.

  • Economic incentives for Ecosystem Services: the lack of economic incentives creates difficulties for sustainable productions. Today, many organizations partner with private companies and governments to find new ways to value and protect our natural resources, often using economic incentives and partnerships. Through digitalization, these organizations are working to overcome the challenges of sustainable production by creating incentives.

There are numerous other sectors where the implementation of digitalization and software can bring benefits to businesses, organizations, and individuals. These include areas such as energy access, sustainable farming, regenerative livestock, as well as the protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems, among others.
