Water savings in agriculture will be certified using NFTs.
Kilimo and WakeUp Labs have begun tokenizing water savings in agriculture to achieve water-neutrality goals.
Kilimo, the leading digital platform for irrigation management in agriculture, launched the first verified water-saving certification platform. They aim to make water use more efficient in multiple agricultural basins worldwide plus encourage thousands of organisations to achieve their water neutrality goals.
WakeUp Labs partnered with Kilimo to provide the technological infrastructure needed to generate water-saving certifications. These certifications will be non-fungible tokens (NFTs) representing the farmers’ water savings. In turn, those NFTs can be bought by companies that want to offset their water footprint. This mechanism will generate additional income for farmers who use water efficiently.
NFT certifications will be recorded on the blockchain, unequivocally proving the water savings achieved while showing the water footprint reduction.
There are already some regions of our planet facing water scarcity where water should be used conscientiously. A 2017 United Nations study stated that by 2030, 50% of the world’s population would experience water scarcity.
“We have had water scarcity in the Maipo Basin for many years, and the estimated trend is not good. As farmers, we have started using Kilimo because there’s a clear incentive to adopt the technology. Making efficient use of water is a priority for us. Water is gold; without it, we can’t grow our trees or even live. We hope Kilimo will help us to be more efficient in terms of production and that it will help us contribute to the country’s water situation”. Felipe Sánchez, Farmer of the Maipo Basin, Santiago, Chile.
WakeUp Labs Co-Founder Maximiliano del Hoyo added: “We are excited to be part of this milestone; Kilimo is one of the most attractive projects in the Climatech industry today, and this partnership opens us up an opportunity to demonstrate the global impact that our technology enables”.
“I am incredibly excited about this game-changing launch: creating the first platform where farmers receive income for saving water, and on the other hand, where companies can offset their water footprint, opens a global market to generate impact at scale”. Mentioned Jairo Trad, CEO of Kilimo.
